MONROVIA, Liberia — Bomi County Senator and Head of the Liberian Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr., has welcomed the appointment of two Liberians to key positions within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), describing it as a major boost for Liberia’s standing in the region.
Senator Snowe congratulated Cllr. Charlyne M. Brumskine on her appointment as a Judge of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice and Commissioner Dehpue Zuo on his appointment as Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of the ECOWAS Commission.
In a statement issued Monday on behalf of the Liberian Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Snowe said the double appointment is a proud moment for Liberia and a clear indication of the competence and value Liberians bring to the regional body.
According to him, the appointments demonstrate the valuable contributions Liberians continue to make toward advancing the ideals and objectives of ECOWAS, which include promoting economic integration, peace, justice and regional cooperation.
"The appointments bring pride to Liberia and provide an opportunity for the two officials to represent the country through professionalism, integrity and dedicated service," Snowe noted.
He extended best wishes to both officials as they take on their new roles.
"As they assume these important regional responsibilities, we wish them every success as they join other Liberians in the ECOWAS system to fly Liberia’s flag high through dedicated service, professionalism, and integrity," Senator Snowe said.
The Bomi County lawmaker also used the occasion to commend the Government of Liberia under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their diplomatic efforts in securing the positions for Liberian nationals.
Snowe said the success reflects the government's active engagement with regional partners and its commitment to ensuring Liberia is not left behind in regional decision-making.
He stressed that having Liberians simultaneously represented within both the ECOWAS Commission — which is the executive arm of the bloc — and the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice — the principal judicial organ — is a significant achievement for the country.
"This simultaneous representation represents a significant achievement for Liberia and should further strengthen our commitment to regional integration and our participation in efforts aimed at promoting justice, peace and cooperation across West Africa," he stated.
Call for More Regional Engagement
Senator Snowe further expressed optimism that Liberia will continue to benefit from constructive engagement with ECOWAS and urged the country to build on the latest achievement to expand its role within the community.
He noted that Liberia has a long history of contributing to peace and democracy in West Africa, and such appointments reaffirm the confidence the region has in Liberian professionals.
"As we celebrate this milestone, let it strengthen our collective resolve to advance Liberia’s role in regional integration and uphold the values of justice, peace, and service across West Africa," Snowe said.
The Liberian Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, he assured, looks forward to continued progress and more gains for Liberia within the regional body, and will continue to work to ensure that Liberia’s voice is heard and respected at the regional level.
Cllr. Brumskine and Commissioner Zuo join a growing list of Liberians serving in various capacities within the ECOWAS system, contributing to policy formulation, economic development, and justice delivery across the 15-member regional bloc.
