Monrovia-A female food vendor at the Red Light commercial zone in Paynesville has denied allegations that human waste was found in food prepared for sale.
The allegation sparked public anger and led to police taking the vendor into custody after Spoon reporters visited the area and spoke with several eyewitnesses.
One bus driver who operates in the area told Spoon that he saw another woman, who regularly sells food at the location, allegedly defecating there last night. He said he confronted the woman, leading to a verbal exchange.
However, the vendor accused in the food contamination allegation said she was not at the location when the incident reportedly occurred.
She told Spoon TV that she only learned of the allegation after her daughter, who had gone to set up their market stall yesterday morning, called to inform her that people were accusing them of putting human waste in food.
The vendor said she later went to the area, where she met an angry crowd before police intervened and took her into custody for her safety.
She was initially taken to the Depot 9, Zone 1 Police Station in Red Light, but was later transferred to the Zone 9 Base 1 Police Station in Jacob Town after an angry crowd reportedly gathered outside the station.
The vendor strongly denied the allegation and said another woman, identified as Aisha, had been selling at the location before her.
Police have not publicly confirmed their findings, and the allegations have not been independently established.
The incident has raised concerns about food safety and sanitation in the Red Light commercial area, while police are expected to determine what actually happened and whether anyone should be held responsible.
